Anglicanism came into being as a result of religious conflicts in England after the Renaissance. The Reformed Church of England under the initiative of the Protestants was established during the rule of Henry VIII in the first half of the 16 century. This was rather ironical, because Henry had been a most ardent Catholic and had even | been given the title of the Defender of the Faith by the Pope. He, however, had various problems. His wife of twenty years had only one surviving daughter and Henry wanted a son to succeed him. Anglicanism came into being as a result of religious conflicts in England after the Renaissance. Moreover, a good many of Henry’s subjects had become protestants and formed a strong political party. The immediate cause was that he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, who was pregnant by him. The Pope refused to grant the annulment of his marriage to Katharina of Arragone on the grounds that her earlier marriage to Henry’s elder brother had not been consummated, and therefore, it did not form an impediment to her marriage to Henry. This great matter of the king, as it was called, took a fairly long time to settle, and ultimately Henry decided to deny the authority of the Pope. With the sanction of the Parliament, the king converted the country into a Protestant one and made himself the head of the church. His daughter Elizabeth by Anne Boleyn, who had been the cause of all this, and who was the last Tudor monarch of England, established the Anglican or the Church of England.
