Wilson's Our Nig as early African American books, and John Rollin Ridge's The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta: The Celebrated California Outlaw, which is considered the primary Local American novel but which too is an early story around Mexican American issues.

American emotional writing, by differentiation, remained subordinate to European models, even though numerous writers did endeavor to apply these shapes to American subjects and subjects, such as foreigners, westbound development, balance, etc. At the same time, American writers made a few long-lasting American character sorts, particularly the "Yankee", the "Negro" and the "Indian", exemplified by the characters of Jonathan, Sambo, and Metamora.
