Protestantism means the ecclesiastical system, founded upon the faith followed by the Protestants collectively. This is actually the principles and the common system of doctrines, taught and propagated by Martin Luther and his followers. This is formally opposed to certain rituals and practices of the Catholic Church, particularly against the corruptions and vices of that church. It originated in the protest against what was deemed as immoral and unholy for the Christian church. Naturally, Protestantism started, under Luther's guidance and leadership, as basically opposed to Roman Catholicism. Protestantism is based on the positive and formal principles that nothing that is not taught in the Holy Scriptures, the authoritative rules of faith and practice in the church, should enter as an essential element into the Christian system. The creed of Protestantism is sharply opposed to the excesses and vices, often sanctioned by the Catholic Church.
